Femi One ‘Utawezana’ song debate

While Femi One has a couple of hits, his 2020 song featuring Mejja dubbed ‘Utawezana’ became the quarantine anthem.

While the song was a hit, it gained even more traction after numerous TikTok challenges and especially one by the sensational Azziad Nasenya which propelled her to overnight fame.

Consequently, the song put Femi One’s career a step further.

The challenge birthed one of the biggest debates around a song with rabid fans arguing that Azziad solely popularised the song claims Femi dismissed noting that it would still be a hit without TikTok coming in handy.

This got fans thinking that the duo have differences which they have refuted.

While appearing in an interview with a local radio station, Femi insisted that she doesn’t know Azziad enough to have a beef with her.

“People don’t really want to know my side of the story. First of all, mimi na Azziad sio marafiki, hatujuani kabisa. Alifanya challenge just like everyone else mwenye alifanya challenge na akasubmit the video and tukapost hiyo video…na mimi na yeye hatuna issue yoyote, hajawai niambia ako na issue na mimi, na mimi sijawai mwambia niko na issue na yeye,” Femi One stated.

She said the song became a hit owing to the level of creativity and work they put into it.

Ngoma ilikuwa ikuwe a success from kutoka turecord hiyo wimbo…from the creativity, the storyline, tulikuwa tunajua wimbo utafanya vizuri. Na kusema ukweli ni mipango ya Mungu, hatuwezi sema ati ni mimi nilifanya ama ni Mejja alifanya, ni unafanya tu kazi, ukifanya kazi nzuri the rest unawachia Mungu, na mimi naamini wimbo ulienda according to God’s plan.”

Femi One says the critics were ‘sexist’

The Kaka Empire signee added that she believes the criticism stems from sexist fans who do not believe in female rappers succeding.

“Honestly mimi nilifeel, venye nilipata backlash yote, nilifeel watu wananicriticize sana kwa sababu mimi ni mwanamke na niko kwa industry na wimbo yangu imeblow up,” she said.

Sikuona watu wakicriticise Mejja as much because people kwa society wanafeel like men wanadeserve hiyo success lakini mimi kwa sababu wimbo ni wangu na umefanya vizuri hawataki kunipatia hiyo credit.

Adding

“Actually hapo ndio mahali issue ilianzia kwa sababu watu hawakuwa wanataka kuona nikipost hiyo wimbo, nikicelebrate nikisema eh wimbo yangu imefikisha 5 million views watu hawataki. Yaani it’s something that iko kwa society, people hawataki kuona, hawaamini mwanamke anaeza fanya kitu mzuri na akuwe successful, they would want to credit someone else for it.”
