Kenyan comedian and activist Eric Omondi has launched a public appeal to find a grandmother who recently tried to pay her grandchildren’s school fees using chickens.

The elderly woman, who hails from Homa Bay, made headlines after showing up at Adiedo Mixed Secondary School in Homa Bay County with six large chickens. She was accompanied by her two grandchildren, who are students at the school.

Taking to his Instagram on Thursday, May 15, 2025, Omondi appealed to Kenyans to help him locate the woman, visibly touched by the heartbreaking story.

“Please help me find this Mother,” he wrote. “If you know her, please DM me or comment with her number. Asante,” he wrote.

Omondi, who has been active in helping needy Kenyans through his initiative Sisi kwa Sisi, did not give further details but is widely expected to step in and assist the family.

According to a post originally shared on Facebook by content creator Kabz Nyar Kisii, the grandmother brought the chickens as partial payment toward the debt. Photos shared online showed the elderly woman seated quietly with her grandchildren as the school principal, James Kabarak, inspected the chickens.

“A grandmother surprised teachers at Adiedo Mixed Secondary School in Homa Bay County after she came to school accompanied by her two grandchildren with six chickens inside a basket to pay school fees,” Kabz Nyar Kisii wrote in her post.

Reactions online

The images sparked an emotional reaction online, with many Kenyans expressing both sympathy and admiration for the grandmother’s determination.

Peter Obedo: Though not funny but it shows the level of poverty some families are languishing in, more so,the concerned shos,a deserving case

Alhahama Shibutse: This is the kind of difficult situations Kenyans go through to take their children to school, when a president doesn’t priorities education, cutting education funds to schools, instead of making education affordable he is making it difficult for parents to afford school fees. Ruto has to go in order for this country to prosper.

Daina Isoe: Where I teach, parents are allowed to bring anything that the school can use for school fees.avocado, sweet potatoes, chicken, sheep ,firewood ……of the quantity they can get, some have been offered to do casual works in school to cut on fee burdens…..students are needy out here indeed

Kepher Atunge: Yet some Luo cowdungs are busy celebrating on how they are in government. It is fucking all of us

Christopher Ondoro: If the government would take bursaries from the MP, MCA, SENATOR, GOVERNOR, WOMEN REPS and give all those monies to the Ministry of Education to fund Education, Education would FREE from Nursery to University Level but because our leaders does not want learned citizens they will do everything possible to scuttle Education!

Ogutu Charles:Why are MPs , Governors, Senators, MCA and the president himself jostling to get hold of CDF kitty? Why can’t the government make education from PG to university levels free of charge and utilize that money on free education funding? Oooh Sorry! We’re pro – western – capitalism economic policies which benefits the west and a few political class in the country.!!!
