Eric Omondi appeals for help to find mother, who abandoned new newborn baby

Kenyan comedian and activist Eric Omondi has appealed to Kenyans to help him trace the mother of a newborn baby who was abandoned in Rongai.
On Saturday, September 6, 2025, Omondi shared a photo of the infant wrapped and placed inside a duffel bag near an estate gate. The baby was later taken in by the police for safety and care.
The comedian highlighted that the situation called for understanding and support rather than judgment.

“I am told this baby was abandoned by the Mother Yesterday in Rongai near an Estate Gate and is currently with the police. If you are the Mother, please contact me. If you know the Mother, please contact me, tumsaidie…Just from the way that baby has been wrapped says a lot about the Mother, and we will not be quick to judge her,” Omondi said in his appeal.

Abandoned babies
The incident adds to a growing number of cases of abandoned babies in the country in recent months. In August this year, human rights activist Njeri wa Migwi was shocked when a baby was left outside her Usikimye offices in Soweto, Kayole.
“This baby has been outside our office about 30 minutes ago, and whoever left her has disappeared,” she wrote on her page.
Migwi said children playing nearby raised the alarm after hearing the baby cry, and the matter was reported to the police.
Earlier in February 2025, a baby girl was abandoned at ITARC Hospital in Naivasha after her mother rejected her because she was born with deformities.
A hospital worker explained that the woman packed her belongings and left immediately after delivery. The hospital staff nicknamed the child “Baby Tayan” and began raising funds for surgery to correct her condition.
In January this year, a one-month-old boy was rescued from a bush in Rarieda after a herdsman heard him crying and alerted villagers. Wrapped in a shawl and placed inside a carton, the child was taken to Madiany Sub-County Hospital before being handed over to the Children’s Department. Local leaders urged young women to seek help instead of abandoning their babies.
In October 2024, residents of Marimanti in Tharaka Nithi were left shaken when a four-month-old baby girl was found outside a home near Nyangumi Stadium. The infant, dressed in light clothing, had been exposed to the cold and mosquito bites and was suffering from a cough.
“The baby has been crying. She needs milk and care,” a local woman said, while appealing to mothers not to desert their children.
