US-based Kenyan comic Elsa Majimbo has vowed to never return to Kenya.
Elsa while speaking to Forbes Magazine, stated that her troubled relationship with Kenyans dates back to 2020 when she started gaining global recognition.
Most Kenyans, she claims, were colourists towards her and wished for her downfall. Majimbo says she is open to visiting her family but would not prolong her stay.
“They were hell-bent on my failure. When the whole world was cheering me on Kenya was praying for my downfall so when I got the chance, I packed my bags and left. I’ll go to see my family but I left and I’m never going back,” Elsa Majimbo stated.
Majimbo said she endured cyberbullying from Kenyans for her skin whom she thought would support her promising career.
“I have a very complicated relationship with Nairobi. When things started going on well for me there was a lot of backlash against me and there were a lot of colourist things said towards me and surprisingly it was people from Kenya who were doing that and they were bullying me on the internet,” she noted.
Elsa Majimbo’s star has continued to shine in Hollywood and in June this year she was featured in Forbes Africa Magazine’s Top 30 Under 30.
In the same month, she signed a fresh deal with IMG and WME models which broadened her portfolio to work through global editorial coverage of fashion, beauty and lifestyle endorsements.
Elsa has been steadily rising from her humorous IG videos about pandemic life to a global star. Her recent awards include an E! People’s Choice Award, a Harvard Vanguard Trophy, a YouTube Streamy, a Forbes Entertainer Award and the GQ Entertainer of the Year Award.
Besides her fashion magazine covers, Majimbo also collaborated with Maison Valentino to create a book, The Alphabet for Kids & Adults.
In a past interview, she noted that she knew she was going to be an icon and encouraged people to believe in themselves and do what’s best for them.
“So many people will discourage you and that’s fine, so many people think they know better and that’s fine, but whatever they know they have been told by someone else and there are some things you can only teach yourself and at the end of the day every single person you know will be out of your life. You need to do what’s best for you always,” she stated.
