Ruto hails Gathegi

President William Ruto himself has repeatedly championed Gathegi as a beacon of Kenyan talent.

Speaking during the National Drama and Film Festival State Concert held at the Nakuru State Lodge on April 16, 2025, Ruto lauded Gathegi’s rise as a clear demonstration of how Kenya’s local theatre and film festivals can launch individuals into the highest echelons of the global creative industry.

“This drama festival has given us so many big people who are setting standards. We also salute Edi Gathegi, the Kenyan star currently lighting up Hollywood with every role he plays,” the president declared, amidst applause from the young performers.

He confirmed the July 2025 release of the ‘Superman’ film, noting that Gathegi’s role as Mr Terrific was a testament to what is possible when individuals dare to harness and hone their creative gifts.

President Ruto also fondly recalled his 2024 visit to Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, where he claimed to have met Gathegi, discussing the film industry’s landscape and the burgeoning place of Kenyan talent on global stages.

“Edi, like many other Kenyans I met at the Tyler Perry Studios in the US a year ago, is proof that Kenyan talent knows no borders,” he emphasised.

Gathegi’s career

Born Edi Mūe Gathegi on March 10, 1979, in Nairobi, Gathegi’s career in Hollywood spans nearly two decades, marked by a versatile range of compelling performances.

He first gained significant recognition for his role as Dr. Jeffrey Cole on the acclaimed medical drama ‘House’.

His filmography includes memorable turns in ‘Gone Baby Gone’, ‘Twilight’ and ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon’, and ‘X-Men: First Class’, where he played Darwin.

On television, he has delivered nuanced performances in AMC’s ‘Into the Badlands’, NBC’s ‘The Blacklist’ and its spin-off ‘The Blacklist: Redemption’, and the crime thriller ‘StartUp’.
