Renowned Kenyan media personality Adelle Onyango has come out to share with her fans a life-changing moment that saw her ditch wigs and embrace her natural self without body enhancements.

In an Instagram post on Thursday, March 27, 2025, the former radio presenter turned podcaster recalled how, during her heyday, she used to love wigs and believed they enhanced her look and made her appear more stunning.

However, she noted that she later had an awakening after meeting a bald African lady in New York, whom she approached, asking her to show her how to shave her head like hers, and shared that this was how she started rocking a bald look.

“I used to love wigs; I used to love how powerful they were as accessories. On a cold night out in New York with a beautiful African lady, over some smoke, I asked her to teach me how to shave my hair off completely like hers, and she did,” she shared.

Self-awareness

According to Adelle, she had worn wigs for a long time and had reached a point where she could change the colors from blue to pink to blonde, given how deeply addicted she was, as she saw them as the perfect accessories to enhance her head and appearance.

She shared that the habit spiralled out of control and mutated into something more profound—she was no longer just wearing wigs for fun but using them as a shield against people who might judge her for how she looked without one.

Adelle added that her insecurities corrupted her innocence, leaving her with no option but to embrace self-awareness and accept who she was, regardless of external opinions.

“Over time, a cunning shift happened. My insecurities corrupted this innocence, and suddenly my wigs became less playful; they became my armor against a judgemental world. But luckily, my self-awareness fought back,” she posted.

Adding further, she shared that her self-awareness kept questioning what exactly she was trying to hide with the wigs and whether she had ever truly accepted herself for who she was, noting that the New York lady who helped her shave her head had come at the perfect time when she needed to let go of her insecurities.

“My self-awareness asked me what I was hiding, and I answered on a cold night out in New York,” she added.

Widespread habit

Adelle, who went on to urge her fans to stop conforming to beauty standards, added that seeking body enhancements only makes one appear more palatable to others.

She told them that, in her case, she is now in a better place, as she deems herself attractive with her bald head and is no longer insecure, having refused to conform to society’s rigid beauty standards.

According to her, real beauty is about bringing one’s ideal, original, and unique look to the table rather than adopting what others consider trendy or conventionally attractive.

“I find myself incredibly attractive bald. I do not conform to anyone else’s definition of beauty but my own. I refuse to live up to beauty expectations birthed from the male gaze, which are often irrational and unattainable. I am not here for your consumption. Beauty is diverse to me, and I bring my own spice to the table,” she shared.
