Kenyan lawyer and political commentator Willis Otieno has fired a bold warning to politicians who are still riding on the legacy of ODM leader Raila Odinga without offering any real vision or leadership for the country.

In a passionate post shared on his X account on Saturday, July 12, Otieno said the political landscape has shifted, and today’s youth are no longer blindly loyal. He noted that young voters are asking difficult questions and demanding substance.

“The youth are no longer chanting names; they’re asking hard questions. They want substance, not sycophancy. Vision, not slogans. The politics of emotional blackmail is dead. We’re not your voting robots. We’re not your ethnic shields,” Otieno wrote.

He went on to criticise politicians who rely on their past associations with Raila to stay relevant in the political scene.

“If your only claim to power is your last selfie with Raila, then you’re already obsolete. This shift is brutal. It’s loud. And it’s irreversible. Either evolve or be politically cremated,” he added.

Shift in leadership

His remarks come just over a week after he made another strong call for a radical shift in Kenya’s leadership culture. In a separate post shared on Thursday, July 3, Otieno urged the country to reject leaders who are only focused on maintaining the status quo.

“Kenya doesn’t need another manager of decline. It needs a visionary, someone who sees beyond his term’s plans and short-term applause,” he said.

He called on leaders to go beyond shallow promises and instead push for real, long-term transformation.

“We need a leader who dares to dream, but more importantly, dares to disrupt the comfortable lies we’ve lived with for too long,” he stated.

Otieno also condemned the duplicity of leaders who claim to represent the people while quietly serving elite interests.

“Not someone who eats with the empire by day and weeps with the poor at night. But someone who breaks the table, builds a new one, and invites all to sit,” he wrote.

The popular political commentator also noted that the country is not just suffering from poverty or unemployment but from a deep hunger for courageous and honest leadership.

“This country is starving; not for food, but for integrity, courage, and imagination. Kenya needs a visionary. Not a boss. A builder,” he said.
