Good governance advocate and lawyer Willis Otieno has accused Members of Parliament of betraying the people who elected them.

He has stated that MPs have turned Parliament into a tool that protects corruption and shields impunity, rather than defending the public interest.

Through his official and verified X handle on Friday, October 24, 2025, Otieno expressed frustration that lawmakers no longer play their oversight role, instead acting as extensions of the executive arm of government.

He said that MPs had abandoned their constitutional duty to question and hold the government accountable.

“Instead of holding the government accountable, MPs have turned Parliament into a rubber stamp for corruption and impunity.

“They pass oppressive taxes without debate, approve loans they don’t understand, and clap for policies that strangle the very citizens who elected them,” Otieno said.

He added that legislators today “fear the President more than they respect the Constitution,” accusing them of prioritising loyalty to power over service to Kenyans.

“They protect power, not the people,” he said.

Growing public frustration

Otieno’s remarks come at a time when public concern over unchecked government spending and controversial new laws has reached a boiling point.

His comments appear to echo growing discontent among Kenyans over the eight controversial bills passed by Parliament earlier this week, legislation that critics argue places heavier financial burdens on citizens while expanding executive power.

The lawyer said the pattern of blindly passing government-sponsored bills without meaningful debate shows how far Parliament has strayed from its intended role as a check on power.

“MPs are supposed to represent the people’s voice,” he said in a follow-up post, “but what we are seeing is a Parliament that nods to everything from State House, no matter how harmful it is to the mwananchi.”

Otieno’s sentiments add to a growing chorus from civil society, opposition leaders, and citizens calling for Parliament to reassert its independence.

Many have accused MPs of rushing through complex pieces of legislation, such as the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes (Amendment) Act and new tax laws, without adequate public consultation.

His statement has since gone viral online, with many Kenyans praising his boldness while others challenged MPs to respond to the claims and prove they still serve the people rather than those in power.
