Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is used to sharing poems and love letters with romantic words such as ‘honey among rocks, lemon of the co-star, soothing balm, and the apple of my eye‘ to celebrate his wife, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi.

But on her 60th birthday, Gachagua took a rather emotive and reflective tone in celebrating the love of his life.

In a well-thought-out celebratory note on Saturday, October 18, 2025, the former second in command reflected on his impeachment tribulations and how Pastor Dorcas cancelled all birthday plans to stay by his bedside as he fought for his life at Karen Hospital.

Gachagua was admitted to the hospital after he failed to testify at his impeachment hearing at the Senate, with his legal team stating that he suddenly fell ill during lunch break.

In his note, Gachagua indicated that his family was humiliated, betrayed, and abandoned at the height of the impeachment hearing, which coincided with Pastor Dorcas’ birthday.

Despite all the sufferings and tribulations during his impeachment, Gachagua showered praises on Pastor Dorcas for shining the light on the family and bringing back joy in their lives.

“We thank God for the gift of family. Happy birthday to the woman of our lives. Kevin, Keith, and I cherish your love, care, and affection. We thank God for this day as we celebrate your birthday. This day a year ago, we were huddled in a hospital room, sick, humiliated, devastated, confused, betrayed, beaten, and abandoned, and you were in tears on your 59th birthday,” Gachagua’s statement read in part.

House full of joy

The former DP went on to reveal that his family is now full of joy after overcoming what he termed as betrayal and abandonment during the ouster hearing.

“Today, we thank God for His mercy, kindness, and favour. A year later, God has put a smile back on our faces, and our home is full of joy. As we celebrate your 60th birthday, our family stands as a clear testimony that God is no man,” Gachagua stated while sharing photos of two sons, Kevin and Keith, in a jovial mood.

Impeachment

On October 18, 2025, senators voted to remove Gachagua from office despite his failure to testify at his impeachment trial after his lawyer said he had been taken to the hospital.

Gachagua was set to appear in the Senate to defend himself, a day after he had pleaded not guilty to 11 charges.

However, Gachagua did not show up, and his lawyer requested a postponement, saying his client was suffering from chest pains and was being treated by doctors at The Karen Hospital.

Senators chose to continue the trial without him, prompting the defence team to leave the chamber.

They then proceeded to impeach him.
