Wamuchomba claims Ruto flew in entourage of 9 choppers to lecture her

Gathoni Wamuchomba has recalled how President William Ruto travelled in nine helicopters to her constituency in Githunguri to lecture her after she opposed the Finance Bill 2023.
Speaking during an interview on a local TV station on Monday, July 15, 2025, Wamuchomba criticised the president’s actions, describing the visit as excessive and unnecessary.
She noted that the area he visited is only a 12-minute drive from the Central Business District when traffic is clear, yet the president chose to arrive in helicopters with his entire entourage.
“12 mins drive when traffic is clear, from the CBD, nine helicopters – is that what you are telling us? Austerity measures – is that what you are telling us? He comes to listen to us,” Wamuchomba posed.
She stated that the president’s main agenda for the visit was to reprimand her over her opposition to the Finance Bill.
According to Wamuchomba, the president stood on the podium with his hands in his pockets and openly attacked her for rejecting the affordable housing plan, accusing her of being hypocritical since she herself lives in a house.
“The president does not come to listen. Maryanne knows very well that the president comes to lecture us; he came to my constituency in 9 helicopters to come and lecture one woman called Gathoni Wamuchomba. He actually pocketed in front of everyone, on the podium, and said, “Nani wewe huezi tuambia maneno ya affordable housing na wewe uko na mortgage.” Lecturing us – is that what you call listening?” she added.
Aldai MP’s earlier remarks
Her remarks came in response to a statement made by Aldai MP Maryanne Keitanny, who had suggested that the president’s travel budget should be increased because he regularly visits the grassroots to listen to citizens.

Wamuchomba, however, dismissed that justification and strongly disagreed with Keitanny’s position.
“When we increase the president’s budget to enable him to travel and listen to people at the grassroots, then we complain… We need to appreciate that he is our symbol of national unity and should be given the protection that is required of a president to travel,” Maryanne said.
