Former Nyeri Town Member of Parliament Ngunjiri Wambugu has commended Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga for apologising following public outrage over his remarks on the death of the late Raila Odinga.

Through a post on X on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, Wambugu praised Kahiga’s move to take responsibility, describing it as an act of maturity and leadership.

“Asante for the apology and explanation, my brother and friend Mutahi Kahiga,” Wambugu wrote.

The former legislator noted that offering an apology in such a heated national moment was not a sign of weakness but rather a demonstration of respect for the nation and the late Raila’s legacy.

What Kahiga said about Raila

Governor Mutahi Kahiga sparked controversy after a clip surfaced showing him making remarks that appeared to celebrate Raila’s death.

Speaking in Kikuyu during a burial ceremony in Nyeri, the governor said that the late Raila’s death was “God’s plan” that had “levelled the playing field” politically.

“You guys can see what had been planned, but God brought something up. Now it’s total confusion. Everybody can see that. We did not harbour hate for anyone, but God came through for us.

“Because the plan that had been hatched, if you look keenly, all goodies were being directed there because of tomorrow’s plans. But God came and brought this thing,” Kahiga said.

He went on to add, “So now people have been told to go back to the drawing board because the plan that was there was probably to throw us out. But who is God?

“Does he take ugali at somebody’s house or sleep in Kayole? He came through in His own way.

“He saw up there people in heaven are disagreeing a lot and came for Baba so that he can go and smooth things up there.”

Kahiga’s apology and statement

But on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, Governor Kahiga had a come-to-Jesus moment where he saw the light and dearly apologised for his remarks, which were misquoted.

“I want to sincerely apologise to our mourning nation, to the family of the Rt. Hon. Former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, Mama Ida Odinga, and Kenyans at large for any hurt that it has elicited,” his statement read in part.

He said his words were not meant to be celebratory but rather to highlight how Raila’s death had reset Kenya’s political landscape.

Kahiga also announced his resignation as the vice chair of the Council of Governors, saying he was taking full responsibility for his words.

“Finally, in noting the huge public interest that this issue has generated, I am taking responsibility for the real and perceived meaning of my remarks and, as a result, I have decided with immediate effect to step down as the Vice Chair of the Council of Governors,” he said.

His apology and resignation have since drawn mixed reactions, with some leaders welcoming his remorse while others continue to demand further accountability.
