Wamalwa urges govt to uphold Constitution, stop abductions

Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has accused President William Ruto’s administration of undermining the Constitution by using state institutions to carry out abductions and suppress dissenting voices.
Speaking during an interview on K24 TV on Monday, July 28, 2025, Wamalwa claimed that the government had resorted to extrajudicial tactics to intimidate opposition figures and human rights defenders, despite having sworn to uphold the Constitution.
“If you have vowed to protect our Constitution, then let the Constitution work. Let Kenyans enjoy their rights,” Wamalwa said.
“Right now, the courts are being used, the police are being used, and even intelligence officers are being used to conduct abductions and torture of young people simply because they are critical of the regime,” he added.
The former Defence Cabinet Secretary criticised the recent labelling of protesters and government critics as terrorists, citing the recent detention of activist Boniface Mwangi as an example of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s crackdown on dissent.
“Every opponent of this government is now being labelled a terrorist — not just those of us in opposition, but even civil society actors. Just the other day, Boniface Mwangi was abducted. Human rights defenders are being targeted,” he remarked.
Unkept promises
Wamalwa accused Ruto of betraying the promises he made to Kenyans, saying the current regime had relied on politics of deceit and failed to deliver on its pledges.
“What Mr. Ruto promised, he has not done. We have seen conman politics — politics of lies, of giving Kenyans false promises. We want a leadership that matches its words with action and is accountable to the citizens,” he stated.

He insisted that the opposition has a duty to keep the government in check and to pressure it into fulfilling its commitments to the public.
“When you make a promise, it is a debt owed to the people. And it is our duty, as the opposition, to put pressure on this government to fulfil those promises,” he explained
According to Wamalwa, the Opposition’s call for Ruto to serve only one term is necessary to put an end to deceitful politics in the country.
“This politics of lies and deception must end. And for it to end, Ruto must be a one-term president,” he asserted.
Rule of law
Wamalwa further called for the restoration of the rule of law and constitutional order, warning that the ongoing crackdown on dissent posed a serious threat to democracy.
“Looking at what is happening in our country today, there is no respect for the rule of law or for human rights. And those who are being oppressed are fellow Kenyans,” he stated.

Wamalwa outlined the opposition’s commitment to restoring constitutional governance, vowing to protect the human rights of Kenyans once elected.
“As the opposition, we want to ensure that we restore the rule of law, respect for our Constitution, and the protection of human rights,” he declared.
