The Kenya Meteorological Department announced on Friday, July 19, that at least 18 counties will experience strong winds and large waves that could have devastating impact.

In a letter addressed to the Ministry of Environment, the Kenya Red Cross, the National Intelligence Service, the Kenya Maritime Authority, the media, the National Disaster Operations Centre among other relevant agencies, the MET says strong winds of more than 20 meters per second are largely expected in Eastern Kenya counties.

The coastal counties along the Indian Ocean will be hit by strong waves, says the weatherman.

The counties to be affected are: Turkana, Masarbit, Mandera, Wajir, Isiolo, Meru, Embu, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, Taita Taveta and Southern Kajiado.

Strong winds are expected from Sunday, July 21 to Wednesday, July 24, says the MET.

“They are expected to strengthen on Monday, July 22, to 25 meters per second and high waves of more than 3m are projected to continue to Tuesday, July 23. The strong winds are likely to reduce to 20 meters per second on Wednesday, July 24, while the wave heights may reduce to 2 meters on the same day,” says MET.

“Residents in the listed areas are advised to be on the lookout for very strong winds and very large waves. Strong winds may blow off roofs, uproot trees and cause structural damages. Very high waves may lower visibility, cause capsizing of boats and threaten the safety of those engaging in the water sports and recreational activities.

“Those in the areas of concern should be on high alert,” says the weatherman.
