Over 100 pupils of Ndalala Primary School in Kwanza, Trans Nzoia county, will for the second day consecutively study under trees after strong winds blew away some of their classroom roofs.

In an interview with K24 Digital, the school’s deputy headteacher Margaret Yego said no casualties were registered in the Friday evening incident that destroyed three classes that housed PP1, Class 5 and Class 6 pupils.

“A strong wind blew away our roofs. We thank God that there were no casualties or injuries. However, we are worried about the safety of our pupils who learn under trees,” Yego said.

She said the school management had already made proposals to the Kwanza constituency National Government Constituency Development Fund committee to repair the infrastructure.

“The National government constructed one classroom for us in the 2019/2020 financial year. As a school, we have written several proposals requesting new classrooms but we have not received any,” she said.

Silas Wakoli said the situation in the school is dire and called for urgent intervention so that normalcy can resume in the school that has been in existence since 1995.

“The learning environment in our school is not conducive for pupils. We have raised concerns over funds meant for development,” Wakoli asked.

Erick Wamalwa, an old boy of the dilapidated school asked Ministry of Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha, to visit the school and help find a solution to the situation that is affecting pupils’ academic performance.

“CS Magoha should visit Ndalala as soon as possible to help us get a long-lasting solution,” Wamalwa said.
