Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi has praised Harambee Stars supporters for celebrating peacefully after the team’s 1-0 victory over Zambia in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

In a statement shared via his X account, the legislator said the colourful scenes witnessed across the country reflected the best way of uniting Kenyans, pointing out that such celebrations were a better show of patriotism compared to violent protests that often lead to the destruction of property.

“This is how we should celebrate our diversity as a nation – not through maandamano that destroys people’s property,” Sudi stated.

Celebrations

In Nairobi, thousands of fans filled designated fan zones, including Uhuru Park, Jacaranda Grounds, DC Grounds, Safari Rally Grounds, Dandora Stadium, Utalii Sports Grounds, Pand Pieri Grounds and Baba Dogo Grounds. Emotions ran high as supporters cheered every tackle and pass, with the atmosphere reaching fever pitch when Ryan Ogam scored in the 75th minute.

The victory sparked wild celebrations in the capital. Supporters were captured dancing, singing and waving flags in the Central Business District, while others lifted plastic chairs in jubilation at fan parks. On Tom Mboya Street, fans danced in circles, hugged strangers and chanted the team’s name in scenes that mirrored the unity and joy football can bring.

Viral videos showed groups of young fans jumping and cheering in unison, while families celebrated together, capturing the spirit of the night.

The win cemented Kenya’s place at the top of Group A with 10 points, setting up a quarter-final clash against Madagascar. Morocco joined Kenya in the last eight after defeating DR Congo 3-1 at Nyayo Stadium. Zambia exited the tournament without a win.

At Kasarani, the Stars dominated possession but had to remain patient against a resilient Zambian side. Substitute Boniface Muchiri provided the breakthrough moment, sliding a clever pass to Ogam, who controlled and smashed the ball past the goalkeeper to send the stadium into raptures. Goalkeeper Farouk Shikalo and the backline ensured the lead stood firm until the final whistle.

President William Ruto had promised cash rewards for every victory, and with this latest result, each player will receive Ksh2.5 million. The team has so far pocketed millions in bonuses during the group stage, with more incentives lined up if they progress further.
