Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has fulfilled his pledge to support the families of Kenyans who were shot during the public viewing of Raila Odinga’s body at Kasarani Stadium.

In a video post on Monday, November 10, 2025, Sonko highlighted his commitment to the families, showing how he had covered City Mortuary fees at Chiromo for Vincent Otieno Ogutu, paid for caskets, and personally assisted the family with other burial preparations.

He also handed out Ksh1,000 to each mourner who had come to his residence during the mourning period.

Early in the morning, the family of Vincent Otieno Ogutu visited Sonko’s residence, where they were welcomed, the final burial preparations were completed, and expenses were sorted before departing to their home county in Migori.

Sonko confirmed that he had also sorted all related expenses for Evans Onyango Miche, ensuring both families could focus on laying their loved ones to rest. The families expressed delight and gratitude, taking pictures with Sonko and conveying their thanks before leaving.

“The last two bodies of the five victims, the late Vincent Otieno Ogutu and Evans Onyango Miche, just left Nairobi a few hours ago to their final resting places in Migori and Homa Bay counties, respectively,” Sonko stated

Sonko stressed that he would personally pursue justice for the victims and ensure accountability for those responsible.

“After we finish the burial, the chairman will come, and we will plan to take the issue to court so we can pursue justice. I want these families to go safely. The Ksh 35,000 for Chiromo has been refunded, the caskets have been paid for, and I will continue to support these households. The families are now taken care of,” he said.

The tragic incident occurred after the Kasarani public viewing, initially scheduled to take place inside Parliament, was relocated to the Moi International Sports Centre due to an unexpectedly large turnout.

When a crowd breached a gate, police responded with tear gas and live bullets, causing chaos as mourners rushed for safety. Five people lost their lives during the incident.
