Slain Meru blogger Sniper laid to rest nearly 2 years after his murder

Slain Meru blogger Daniel Muthiani, widely known as Sniper, has been laid to rest, 19 months after his brutal murder.
Sniper was buried on Friday, August 22, 2025, at his home in Kabuitu, Igembe East ward, Igembe Central constituency. During his burial ceremony, family, friends, and relatives urged the government to ensure justice is served.
Eulogy
Igembe East Ward Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Murithi Mutiria, in his eulogy, described Sniper as a voice that represented the struggles, hopes, and aspirations of the community, and that his death was not only a loss to his family but also to Meru and Kenya at large.
“Sniper’s voice echoed the struggles, hopes, and aspirations of our community. His untimely death is not just a loss to his family, but to Meru and Kenya at large. We mourn a brave soul whose life was cut short by cruelty,” he said.
“Your blood will not go in vain, brother. We will not rest until justice prevails. Those behind this heinous act will never know peace.”

Muthiani’s murder
Muthiani was reported missing on December 2, 2023, before he was found dead on December 16 on the banks of the Mutonga River in Tharaka Nithi County.
An autopsy conducted at Marimanti Level 4 Hospital Mortuary revealed that the deceased was tortured before being strangled to death.
According to government pathologist Johansen Oduor, Muthiani had strangulation marks on his neck and also exhibited signs of a person who lacked oxygen. He also noted that the blogger sustained injuries on his head and suffered fractured ribs.
The postmortem examination of his body also showed that it had decomposed after staying in water for several days.
“There were no signs of struggle and he seemed to have been completely subdued to a level that he could not fight back. We have taken some samples of organs that will be subjected to toxicology tests to establish whether there were substances used to achieve this,” Oduor said.
Sniper’s body has been lying in Maua Methodist Hospital mortuary ever since.
