Senator Nyutu condemns governor Kahiga’s remarks on Raila’s demise

Murang’a County Senator Joe Nyutu has sharply condemned Governor Mutahi Kahiga’s controversial remarks made following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, terming them reckless and deeply insensitive.
Speaking at a local TV Station on Thursday, October 23, 2025, Senator Nyutu said that any right-thinking Kenyan should strongly denounce Kahiga’s comments, noting that Raila’s contribution to the country’s democracy and freedoms transcended politics and deserved utmost respect.
“Coming to Kahiga’s remarks on Tuesday, I think it is something anybody who is human, anybody who values Kenya, and employs some reason before they start engaging their mouths should condemn in the strongest terms possible,” Nyutu said.

The Senator faulted Kahiga for what he described as a lack of decorum and respect during a period of national mourning.
“Governor Kahiga has been very reckless, and we condemn that. I have a lot of respect for Raila Amollo Odinga. The freedoms we enjoy today, even the freedom to speak openly, were fought for by him,” Nyutu stated.
He went on to remind Kenyans of Raila’s long history of sacrifice for the nation, noting that the former Prime Minister endured nine years of detention for standing up against oppression and advocating for multi-party democracy.

“He is somebody who was detained for nine years, not because he was looking for his own glory, but because he was fighting for the rights of Kenyans. Nobody knows what his family went through when he was in detention,” he said.
Nyutu added that Raila’s background as the son of Kenya’s first Vice President did not stop him from identifying with the struggles of ordinary citizens.
“This is someone who could have chosen to live a comfortable life, but he sacrificed his privilege to fight for Kenyans. Kahiga should have known the kind of person he was making reckless statements against,” the Senator emphasised.
Kahiga’s remarks
Governor Kahiga made the controversial remarks during a burial ceremony in Nyeri, speaking in Kikuyu and later sparking outrage nationwide.
“You guys can see, you can see what had been planned, but God brought something up. Now it’s total confusion. Everybody can see that.
“We did not harbour hate for anyone, but God came through for us,” the governor said.
