Section of Nairobi Expressway to be closed for 3 days
Motorists in Nairobi have been advised to prepare for traffic disruption due to the temporary closure of a key section of the Nairobi Expressway.
In a public notice issued by Moja Expressway Company on Thursday, May 15, 2025, it announced that the stretch between the overpass at James Gichuru Roundabout and Njuguna’s Place on Waiyaki Way will be closed from 6:00 a.m. on Friday, May 16, to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, May 19, 2025.
The closure is necessary to facilitate scheduled construction and maintenance works aimed at enhancing the safety and efficiency of the expressway.
“Motorists are informed that the Nairobi Expressway section from the overpass at James Gichuru Roundabout to Njuguna’s Place on Waiyaki Way will be temporarily closed from 06:00 a.m. on Friday, May 16, to 08:00 p.m. on Monday, May 19, to facilitate road construction and maintenance works,” Moja Expressway Company announced.
While the overpass section will be inaccessible during this period, traffic on the underpass and the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway will remain unaffected.
“Please note that traffic on the underpass and the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway will not be affected,” Moja Expressway Company announced.
“Apologies for the inconvenience caused, and thank you for choosing the Nairobi Expressway.”
Motorists planning to use the overpass to bypass the James Gichuru Roundabout are encouraged to plan alternative routes in advance to avoid potential delays during the period of closure.
Similar closures
This is the latest in a series of temporary closures announced by Moja Expressway as part of ongoing improvement works on the Nairobi Expressway.
On Saturday, May 10, 2025, the company announced the temporary overnight closure of Museum Hill Exit A to allow for planned maintenance and construction work along the Nairobi Expressway.
That closure ran from 11:00 pm on Saturday until 5:00 am on Sunday, May 11, 2025.
Moja Expressway recommended the Haile Selassie exit as an alternative route.
“Please note that Museum Hill Exit A will be temporarily closed from 11:00 pm on Saturday, May 10, 2025, to 5:00 am on Sunday, May 11, 2025, to facilitate construction and maintenance work. Motorists are advised to plan their trips accordingly or use alternative routes such as the Haile Selassie Exit,” the notice read.
“Apologies for the inconvenience caused, and thank you for choosing the Nairobi Expressway.”
Moja Expressway manages the Nairobi Expressway under a public-private partnership with the Government of Kenya.
