11:50 AM

In efforts to reduce traffic congestion, Nairobi Expressway on Saturday, January 20, 2024, announced the commencement of the trial operation of the newly completed Haile Selassie Exit Plaza.

The new exit that features five lanes targets to ease traffic between Capital and Haile Selassie Roundabout offering smooth access to Nairobi CBD, Upper Hill and Ngong Road.

Introducing the #HaileSelassieExit on the Nairobi Expressway! Say goodbye to traffic with enhanced #Comfort #Convenience and seamless #connectivity,” Moja Expressway stated while encouraging motorists to utilize the new exit.

The 27km highway, that connects Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in the east of the city to the Nairobi-Nakuru highway in the west was commissioned in July 2022 by the retired President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In July 2023, the government lifted the suspension of Public Service Vehicles (PSVs)/matatus from using the Nairobi Expressway after a temporary restriction barring commercial passenger vehicles with a capacity of more than seven passengers due to increased incidents of road carnage.

In a statement, Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport Kipchumba Murkomen noted that the new order follows a successful exercise by the MOJA Expressway Company in creating awareness to the matatu industry on the terms and conditions of using the Nairobi Expressway.

“The exercise has proved successful with PSVs taking the necessary steps to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and adhere to set rules and regulations,” part of the statement reads.
