Salasya takes on Sifuna over mixed signals on Ruto’s re-election bid

Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has launched a blistering attack on ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, accusing him of hypocrisy and double standards over the ongoing debate surrounding a possible endorsement of President William Ruto.
Salasya, in a fiery statement shared on his X account on Sunday, July 3, 2025, blasted Sifuna for misleading Kenyans by displaying conflicting behaviour, acting cooperative and then launching attacks once out of their company.
He emphasised that such inconsistency undermines the credibility of the opposition and weakens public trust. The MP also expressed his disapproval of sharing platforms with leaders he described as indecisive and unprincipled.
Salasya further accused ODM of sidelining him politically, referencing his removal from all parliamentary committees. He linked this move to internal party politics and accused Sifuna of being part of the problem.
“Edwin W. Sifuna stop taking Kenyans for granted. When you are with them unakunja mukia, ukitoka nje wewe ni makelele. I can’t share a platform with kigeugeu. I was punished by ODM and removed from all committees. Stop lying to Kenyans bwana. Wajinga waliisha. You are a chameleon, watermelon. Nkt!” Salasya declared.
He was particularly critical of Sifuna’s opposition to endorsing President Ruto while benefiting from government-led initiatives such as economic empowerment programs. Salasya implied that Sifuna’s rejection of a presidential endorsement was selective and insincere, especially if he continued to support or participate in other government programs.
The first time MP warned against confusing the public with mixed messages and stressed the need for clarity, consistency, and integrity among leaders.
“So you mean utaaccept everything apart from endorsing him? I think you are joking. You are not reliable. Stop it! Kwanza hiyo 1M unapeana unapewa kama hao wa economic empowerment. I don’t like someone who likes confusing Kenyans,” Salasya added.

Sifuna on Ruto’s endorsement
Salasya’s criticism follows remarks made by Sifuna during a political event held on Sunday, August 3, 2025, in Saboti, Trans Nzoia County. There, the Nairobi Senator made it clear he would not back President Ruto’s re-election bid even if the ODM party chooses to do so.
“I assure ODM supporters that my stance remains. Raila himself has said that this is a democratic party and any member is free to speak their mind. Yet some thugs claim I cannot hold independent views simply because I’m secretary-general,” Sifuna said.
Adding;
“Ile siku ODM watasema ati wanaenda na Kasongo, hio siku siko ndani. Mimi siko ndani kabisa.”

While some critics within ODM accuse Sifuna of being a rebel and undermining party unity, he maintains that loyalty to the party should never outweigh personal convictions.
“I am willing to read whatever statement ODM releases, even if it insults me. But if they ever decide to support Ruto in 2027, I will not read that, and I will not be part of it,” Sifuna said.
He went on to sarcastically mention Nyando MP Jared Okello as a possible replacement.
“If you think someone else is better suited for this job, like Jared with his polished speeches, let him take over.”
Sifuna also expressed disappointment in what he described as ODM’s loss of ideological clarity.
“The party no longer speaks with one voice. This ‘broad-based’ government arrangement has created confusion within our ranks. Supporters don’t know where we stand anymore,” he lamented.
