Meet Muhoozi’s eldest son Ruhamya: Fresh graduate of UK’s most prestigious military academy Sandhurst

Ruhamya Kainerugaba, the eldest son of Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has graduated from the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom.
Ruhamya completed the academy’s Officer Commissioning Course alongside fellow Ugandan officer cadet Andrew Bakira Ruyondo. The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), in a report published on August 8, 2026, confirmed that Gen Muhoozi attended the graduation ceremony in Sandhurst to witness his son’s milestone.
The graduation has placed the young officer in the spotlight, particularly because he is following a path similar to that of his father, who also trained at Sandhurst.
Following in his father’s footsteps
According to the UPDF, Muhoozi graduated from Sandhurst in 2000, making his son’s graduation a striking continuation of the family’s military tradition.
The UPDF said the Sovereign’s Parade marked the formal completion and commissioning of the officer cadets, with Ruhamya and Ruyondo among those commissioned into the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces.
Gen Muhoozi also reflected on the similarities between his experience and that of his son. The Monitor reported that the CDF had previously shared side-by-side photographs of himself and Ruhamya during their respective Sandhurst training, describing them as a “father and son” going through similar hardships, separated by 27 years.
Ruhamya’s graduation therefore represents more than an academic achievement, marking the beginning of his career as a military officer.
A third generation in military service
Ruhamya’s achievement has also drawn attention to his family’s long association with Uganda’s military.
The Daily Monitor reported on August 16 that President Yoweri Museveni congratulated his grandson following the Sandhurst commissioning. The publication identified Ruhamya as Muhoozi’s eldest son and reported that he had been commissioned alongside fellow Ugandan cadet Andrew Bakira Ruyondo.
The Independent similarly reported that Ruhamya had enlisted in the UPDF as a private in June 2025 before being selected for training at Sandhurst.
His graduation now places him within a third generation of the Museveni family associated with military service, following his grandfather, President Museveni, and his father, Gen Muhoozi.
For Ruhamya, the Sandhurst graduation marks the beginning of a new chapter as he starts building his own career within Uganda’s armed forces.
