Salasya proposes alternative to Ruto’s Affordable Housing ahead of 2027 bid

Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has unveiled his ambitious and detailed plan for Kenya as he sets his sights on the presidency in the 2027 general elections.
In a statement shared via his official X account on Thursday, June 19, 2025, Salasya passionately expressed his vision for a transformed nation, emphasising the need for practical solutions that connect with the daily lives of ordinary Kenyans.
He highlighted the reality of rural life by using his personal story as an example, pointing out the significant cost he incurred building a house in his home village of Kisumundogo.
According to him, it does not make sense to push villagers into urban affordable housing schemes when they have already invested so much in their homes. Instead, he plans to focus on supporting people where they are, in their communities.
“This house has cost me a lot of money to build it at my home in my village of Kisumundogo, it sounds so unrealistic to tell people to leave their homesteads to go live in affordable housing in the neighbourhood towns from their villages,” he stated.
“As a president, I will encourage smart farming that is more productive and promising, where no need for big tracts of land. I will only work hard to remove slums in big towns by introducing new village homes, hakuna pesa ya mkenya kukatwa,” he stated.
Salasya pledged to promote smart farming techniques that do not require large tracts of land but still promise high productivity. He believes that agriculture, if done wisely, can be a powerful tool for economic empowerment, especially in rural areas.
He also proposed a radical plan to upgrade urban slums. He explained that his administration would build well-planned village-style homes equipped with all necessary social amenities such as schools, hospitals, and access to clean water and electricity.
The idea is to develop new residential areas outside major cities like Nairobi and connect them with efficient transport systems, such as electric commuter trains, similar to what he observed in Morocco.
“I will partner with investors to build houses at low cost, eg in Nairobi, I will decide to build hospitals, schools, and all social amenities, eg in Kajiado near Nairobi, give them electric train or commuter train like in Morocco where I was,” the first-time MP stated.
Once the alternative settlements are in place, Salasya plans to demolish slums and replace them with modern housing. He said he would work closely with investors to deliver low-cost housing while ensuring that no extra burden is placed on Kenyan taxpayers.
At the heart of his plan is industrialisation. Salasya promised to establish new industrial zones, particularly near newly developed housing areas, to create jobs and absorb the growing youth population. His vision includes building a self-reliant nation where innovation, manufacturing, and job creation are priorities.

New leadership
In a past address, he declared his presidential ambitions, highlighting that the current political environment had motivated him to run for office. He believes Kenya needs a new kind of leadership that is bold, transformative, and focused on economic growth.
He said his decision to vie for the presidency came after long reflections about the state of the country. He wants to lead Kenya into a new era of prosperity by focusing on industrial development, creating sustainable jobs, and ensuring social justice for all.
Salasya stressed that the country is at a turning point and can no longer afford to export talent and labour while local industries remain stagnant and millions of youth remain unemployed.
He believes that Kenya must rise to the challenge and unlock the immense potential of its people through innovation and strong leadership.
