Salasya hits back at Ruto over power handover remarks

Mumias East MP Peter Kalerwa Salasya has fired back at President William Ruto following his controversial remarks suggesting that the government should not be handed over to leaders without a plan.
In a strongly worded response on Monday, June 16, 2025, Salasya accused Ruto of behaving like Kenya was his personal property and dismissed the idea that only the current government had a vision for the country.
“To President Ruto,” Salasya wrote on X, “Kenya is not your personal fiefdom. It is a sovereign nation of 50 million citizens, not the domain of one individual’s ambition. We will steadfastly oppose authoritarianism in all its manifestations.”
Ruto says opposition has no plan
Salasya’s reaction came just after President Ruto spoke during a church service at Friends’ Comprehensive School in Kivaywa, Kakamega County, on Sunday, June 16, 2025. In his address, Ruto said the opposition had no clear roadmap for the country’s development.

“These other people have no plan,” Ruto said. “We cannot hand over leadership to people whose only agenda is Ruto must go. How will that help you? You don’t know how our youth will get jobs, how agriculture will progress, or how our children will get an education.”
The President went on to accuse opposition leaders of bitterness and tribal politics.
“Even when they speak, it’s with so much anger. I don’t know who wronged them,” he added.
The war of words comes at a time of rising political tension ahead of the 2027 general election. Opposition leaders, including Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka, DCP’s Gigathi Gachagua and DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa, have intensified criticism of Ruto’s administration, citing the high cost of living and what they call poor governance.
Ruto’s trip to Lugari, although framed as a spiritual and development outreach, has clearly taken a political tone. Alongside handing over a school bus to Kivaywa Boys and unveiling a Ksh3 billion rural electrification project, the president used the platform to send a message to his critics.
