President William Ruto has taken a sharp jab at Kenya’s opposition during a church service at Friends’ Comprehensive School, Kivaywa, stating that they lack a plan for the country’s future and that handing them power would be a mistake.

“Hawa watu wengine, hawana mpango,” Ruto said firmly on Sunday, June 15, 2025. “And we cannot hand over to people hawana mpango, ati mpango yao ni ‘Ruto must go, Ruto must go.’ Itakusaidia na nini? Hujui vile vijana wetu watapata kazi, hujui vile kilimo itaendelea, hujui vile watoto watasoma. You have no plan to do anything,” he added.

Translation: These other people have no plan, and we cannot hand over leadership to people without a plan, whose only agenda is ‘Ruto must go, Ruto must go.’ How will that help you? You don’t know how our youth will get jobs, you don’t know how agriculture will progress, you don’t know how children will get an education. You have no plan to do anything,”

He went further, accusing the opposition of fuelling tribalism and bitterness.

“Ata ukiwaangalia wakiongea, wanaongea na kisirani mingi sana. Sijui nani aliwakosea.”

Ruto’s remarks come against a backdrop of heightened political tension. Since the 2022 elections, the opposition has kept pressure on his administration, rallying supporters with calls for change.

Among those in the opposition coalition is former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who was removed from the position in October 2024. Other key figures include Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa.

The President’s visit to Lugari was not solely political. It formed part of a broader strategy to connect with grassroots communities in Western Kenya. Accompanied by leaders such as Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Ruto blended spiritual messages with development pledges.

During the visit, the president also handed over a school bus to Kivaywa Boys Secondary School.

He announced a substantial Ksh3 billion rural electrification programme targeting 85,000 households across Western Kenya, underscoring his development agenda.
