Mumias East Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya has claimed that there was a scheme by the government to ensure no elections are held in 2027.

Taking to his official X account in the wee hours of Friday, July 11, 2025, Salasya argued that the selection of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman and commissioners was done with technical mistakes so that some people could be pushed to go to court.

“Let everybody pray for this country. There is a scheme to ensure no election is to be held by 2027. They made technical mistakes and pushed people to go to court to oppose it,” Salasya stated.

Salasya went ahead to argue that the nullification of the appointment of the IEBC chairperson and six commissioners could have meant that the commission would have remained reconstituted until around 2026, a year before the General Elections.

This, the youthful lawmaker claimed, could have denied Kenyans a chance to register as voters and prepare for the upcoming 2027 elections.

“With all this nullification, it means don’t expect IEBC commissioners in office this year; maybe the earliest next year. It’s a big blow to Kenyans, but it was done technically to deny Kenyans the IEBC commissioners to start to register new voters and prepare for the coming election in two years time,” he stated.

IEBC commissioners gazetted

President William Ruto has, however, formally gazetted the appointments of the new chairperson and six commissioners of the IEBC.

The move aims at regularising the process following a recent High Court ruling.

In Gazette Notice No. 9269, dated July 10, 2025, Ruto appointed Erastus Edung Ethekon as the new Chairperson of the IEBC for a six-year term.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 250 (2) as read with section 5 (2) of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Act and Paragraph 4 of the First Schedule to the Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Erastus Edung Ethekon to be the Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission for a period of six (6) years,” Ruto stated.
