A dramatic scene unfolded at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, March 23, 2025, as Mumias East MP was attacked by a group of individuals during the Kenya National men’s football team, Harambee Stars’ World Cup qualifier match against Gabon.

The lawmaker, who had joined thousands of fans to watch the highly anticipated match, found himself at the centre of a violent altercation. Videos circulating online show one of the attackers striking the MP with a trash bin as his security team attempted to shield him from further harm.

As the chaos ensued, some spectators were heard shouting at the youthful legislator, demanding that he show respect for President William Ruto.

“Heshimu rais,” they chanted.

The situation quickly escalated, forcing the legislator’s security team to escort him out of the stadium. Footage captured Salasya who was donning AFC Leorpards’s jersey rushing towards his car, surrounded by bodyguards who worked to ensure his safety.

Saboti MP Caleb Amisi condemned the attack calling it an unacceptable act that violates the principles of democracy and free speech.

Taking to his X account, Amisi expressed his outrage over the incident and demanded that those responsible be held accountable. He emphasized that freedom of speech and expression is a right protected by the Constitution, regardless of differing opinions.

Amisi acknowledged that while not everyone agrees with Salasya’s approach to politics, he is a young leader trying to make his mark. He urged for tolerance and respect in political discourse, warning that such acts of violence should not be normalized.

“This is uncouth uncalled for and lugubrious. Whoever planned this against @pksalasya must be brought to book. It must stop. Freedom of speech and expression is guaranteed in our constitution. We may not agree on how he does his things, but this is a young man trying his luck in life. Kenya needs a renaissance!” Amisi stated.

This violent encounter came amid anti-government chants that erupted within the stadium. Thousands of fans joined in unison, shouting, “Ruto must go.”

Videos on social media depict the crowd expressing their frustration with President Ruto’s leadership.

The increasing use of the “Ruto must go” slogan dates back to June 2024, when Gen Z-led protests erupted against the controversial Finance Bill 2024.
