Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has explained why some Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) had moved to impeach him.

Speaking during an interview at Milele FM on Wednesday, October 7, 2025, Sakaja said the push was driven largely by frustrations over stalled bursaries and scholarships.

He added that part of the tension came from pressures on the ground, particularly after last year, when the Controller of Budget froze bursaries and scholarships.

“Imagine Nairobi, 119,000 students; bursaries are about Ksh5,300 for Form One and some Form Two and Form Three students. When these funds are suspended, the pressure is huge. People rely on this support, and naturally, frustration builds,” Sakaja said, highlighting how such financial challenges put MCAs in a difficult spot with their constituents.

Addressing criticisms over his visibility, Sakaja noted that while some MCAs felt he was not present enough, he operates from a private office to handle sensitive issues efficiently.

“I have had this office since I was a senator. Some matters must be handled privately. Politics on the ground are complex, and you must protect the interests of those you serve,” he said.

He credited Raila Odinga and President William Ruto for intervening, which helped calm tensions and temporarily halt impeachment talks.

“It is by the grace of God and good leadership that we reached a resolution. People want quick solutions, but meaningful results take time,” Sakaja noted.

While the impeachment threat has been suspended, Sakaja acknowledged that political pressure remains. He said he is committed to addressing MCAs’ concerns, improving service delivery, and rebuilding trust with the assembly in the coming weeks.

The governor’s remarks come months after the ODM-led assembly meeting, where the MCAs agreed to suspend impeachment, allowing Sakaja room to address issues raised. While interventions from Raila Odinga and William Ruto helped prevent his removal.
