Saba Saba protests: Police arrest man linked to Kitengela hospital vandalism

Police have arrested a man believed to be involved in the destruction of property at Kitengela Sub-County Hospital during the Saba Saba protests held on July 7, 2025. The arrest followed days of intelligence-led operations by law enforcement agencies.

The man, whose identity has not yet been released to the public, was reportedly captured on CCTV footage vandalising hospital property during the protests. The footage played a crucial role in helping detectives track him down. According to a statement by the National Police Service, the suspect was arrested on Friday, July 11, 2025,in Kitengela, Kajiado County.

Police said the man led officers to his rented house in Noonkopir, a residential area on the outskirts of Kitengela. During a search of the premises, officers recovered a black marvin cap and grey jacket believed to have been worn by the suspect on the day of the incident. These items have been kept as evidence.

Investigations and arrests

The man is currently being held in police custody and is expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are complete. Authorities say they are continuing their probe to identify and apprehend other individuals who participated in acts of vandalism and destruction during the protests.

In a statement released Friday, the National Police Service said it remains focused on bringing all those responsible for criminal acts to justice.

“The National Police Service remains committed to protecting life and property and will continue to pursue and bring to justice all those involved in criminal acts during the recent protests,” the statement posted on X on Saturday, July 12, 2025, read.

The Saba Saba protests, largely driven by Gen Z activists and civil society groups, saw demonstrations held in various towns across the country, including Nairobi, Kisumu, Meru, and Eldoret. While the protests were largely peaceful, several cases of violence, looting, and damage to public property were reported.

As the country continues to deal with the aftermath of the protests, law enforcement agencies have urged the public to remain calm and cooperate in ongoing investigations.
