A woman was arraigned in a Nyeri court on Thursday, January 2, and charged with obtaining money by false pretense and promising a boda boda rider that she would take him to visit Deputy President (DP) William Ruto for end-of-year party.
Jane Wangui Mwangi appeared before Nyeri Chief Magistrate Wendy Kagendo and denied one count of receiving money by false pretense.
Ms Mwangi was accused that on December 28, 2019, with intent to defraud, obtained Sh 100,000 from Charles Ndegwa, pretending she could secure his team a visit to DP Ruto’s home, a fact she knew false.
She was released on a bond of Sh5,000,000 with a surety of similar amount until January 13, 2020, when the matter will be mentioned.
According to police reports, boda boda riders from Nyeri County were contributing Sh1,000 each to the county chairman Charles Ndegwa, with claims they would get branded T-shirts and hats before the visit to Dr Ruto’s Karen home.
Nyeri Central Sub County Police Commander Paul Kuria confirmed that they had arrested two men and two women who are allegedly linked to the team that received money from over 100 motor bike riders.
“They contributed money and sent to an unknown person in Nairobi whom we are yet to identify. They did not have a documented order to go where they claim they wanted to visit,” Kuria said.
He said that investigations are ongoing to reveal the mastermind of the plan adding, “We will interrogate those in custody because they were sent by the person who received the money.”
