Ruto warns against child-free marriage trend at Senator Chesang’s wedding
President William Ruto has warned against what he termed as a rising modern trend among couples who deliberately choose to avoid having children, saying such behaviour undermines the natural and social fabric of family life.
Ruto made the remarks during the lavish wedding ceremony of Trans Nzoia Senator Allan Chesang and his bride Chanelle Kittony, which took place on Saturday, November 1, 2025.
The ceremony, held in Trans Nzoia County, brought together a host of dignitaries, politicians, and close family members from both sides.
Speaking during the celebrations, the Head of State expressed concern over what he described as a growing fashion among young couples who view parenthood as optional or burdensome.
He said that while marriage is a personal commitment, it is also a societal responsibility to build families and ensure continuity, urging the newlyweds and other young couples to embrace the role of parenting with pride and responsibility.
“I think it is important that we tell these young ones that, because nowadays it seems fashionable not to have children. I do not know where that fashion is heading. So make sure you do the work of having children, we want to see them. Is that not so?” Ruto said during the wedding.

Ruto went on to commend Senator Chesang and Chanelle for taking a significant step in formalising their union, adding that the country looks forward to seeing them build a family together.
He reminded the newlyweds that the joy of marriage lies not only in companionship but also in nurturing future generations.
“I want to tell you, Chanelle, that you have a very strong and hardworking man. The two of you will make a wonderful couple. And as it has been said, we are expecting grandchildren,” the president added.
The colourful event was attended by several high-profile guests, including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Siaya Governor James Orengo, Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu, and artists such as KRG The Don.
Others in attendance included media personality Oga Obinna and his close friend, Bespoke City founder Bolo Bespoke, who drew attention after standing to warmly greet each other as the star-studded event got underway.
The theme of the wedding was lilac with a touch of cream, and the venue was decorated to reflect a royal traditional setting.
Senator Chesang looked dashing in a white shirt paired with a regal purple vest and fedora hat, perfectly matching the wedding’s colour scheme. His bride, Chanelle, stunned the guests with her elegant purple and white gown, radiating grace and confidence throughout the celebration.
