Ruto: Muturi told me he was not able to do the AG job

President William Ruto has revealed behind-the-scenes events that forced him to transfer Justin Muturi from being the attorney general (AG) to a cabinet secretary and later firing him.
Speaking to journalists on Monday, March 31, 2025, ahead of his Mt Kenya tour, Ruto said that the disgraced CS asked him not to be appointed to the position, since he had not practised law for a long time.
“I gave Muturi a job to be the attorney general. He told me, that because he had not practised for a long time since he was a magistrate, went to parliament and became a speaker, he would not be able to do it. After some time I saw that for sure he was not able to do the job. Maybe it was my mistake because I persuaded him to do the job. I saw it good to change the job for him and game him a ministerial job,” Ruto stated.
“Later he went on strike and stopped attending cabinet meetings. What was I supposed to do?”
Muturi, who served as attorney general before he was relieved of his duties following the June 2024 Gen-Z-led protests, during which Ruto dismissed his entire cabinet, faulted the president, noting that he was pushing for the establishment of the Muslim Endowment Fund without following due process.
“I had a problem with the AG who was there before—he was fairly incompetent. But now, I have a very competent lady in the position, and I can assure you that the issues of Wakf will be sorted out within months,” Ruto stated.
Muturi served as the attorney general between 2022 and 2024 before he was reassigned as the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service.
Muturi has been on a collision path with the head of state after he revealed that his son had been abducted by gunmen believed to be NIS officers and detained for hours before he was released at the behest of the president.
Skipped meetings
He skipped several cabinet meetings during their disagreement, noting that he would only attend them when the cabinet was ready to discuss the rampant abductions and killings of innocent youth in the country.
Following his decision, Muturi continued to serve in the Public Service Ministry even as Ruto’s political allies called for his resignation.
Ruto fired Muturi on March 26, 2025, and replaced him with the Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku.
