Preparations for the burial of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga have begun at his family’s home in Bondo, Siaya County.

By Thursday, October 16, 2025, night, the digging of Raila’s grave had started, marking the beginning of his final journey home. As darkness fell, emotional scenes unfolded around his homestead as youth walked through the roads holding candles, taking part in a night vigil to honour his memory.

The atmosphere was calm but emotional, with mourners speaking in low tones as they reflected on the life of a man who had shaped Kenya’s political history for decades.

Calls for peace and calm

The presence of Raila’s elder brother, Oburu Oginga, at the home earlier in the evening was deeply symbolic. His arrival was met with quiet respect as family members and community elders continued overseeing preparations for the burial.

Speaking to the media at the family compound, Oburu confirmed that the late ODM leader would be buried next to his parents, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Mary Odhiambo Odinga.

“…later on, Raila will be buried next to our mom and dad in a private burial, which will be attended only by a few people. I am pleading for peace, my people. Please be peaceful and welcome visitors,” Oburu said. His words came shortly before light rain began to fall, adding to the sombre mood of the evening.

At the same time, Oburu assured Kenyans that all arrangements were being handled in accordance with Raila’s wishes. He said the family was grateful for the overwhelming support from the public but asked mourners to remain calm as the nation continued to grieve. “This is a painful moment for our family and the country. Let us mourn with dignity and peace,” he added.

On Saturday, October 18, 2025, mourners are expected to gather at Jomo Kenyatta Mambo Leo grounds in Kisumu for a final public farewell before the body is moved to Bondo for the burial ceremony.
