PS Omollo reveals how Gen Z protests affected Affordable Housing occupancy in Kirinyaga

The Principal Secretary for the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, Raymond Omollo, has revealed a major setback that has undermined the Affordable Housing Project in Kirinyaga County.
PS Omollo, in an X post on Saturday, 20 September 2025, revealed how the June 2024 Gen Z protest delayed occupancy of the projects despite them being fully completed and ready for occupancy.
The PS also revealed that the modern facility comprises five residential blocks: two blocks of one-bedroom units, two blocks of two-bedroom units, and a block of bedsitters.
In addition, part of the modern facility includes at least seven retail shops, which, according to PS Ommolo, is set to support local enterprise and serve the residents.

Omollo further revealed how occupancy of the units has stalled as parts of the facility sustained several damages.
“However, despite its completion, occupancy has been delayed after parts of the facility sustained damages during the Gen-Z protests of June 2024,” Omollo noted.

Omollo’s call to the public
Omollo further revealed that the unfortunate setback underscores the urgent need to repair the structures while calling on the collective responsibility to safeguard critical public infrastructure that serves communities.

On his part, the PS revealed how Kirinyaga, a rapidly growing agricultural town, has continued to experience rising demand for decent and affordable housing as its population expands and urbanisation accelerates, hence the urge by the government to launch the Kirinyaga Affordable Housing Project.
“To respond to this pressure, the government launched the Kirinyaga Affordable Housing Project, with the foundation stone laid by H.E. President William Ruto in June 2023,” PS Omollo said.
According to Omollo, despite the repairs set to be done, the project is completed at 100%, making it one of the very first developments under the initial phase of the nationwide Affordable Housing Programme.
