PS Oluga launches urgent blood drive at JOOTRH following Kisumu–Kakamega highway crash

Principal Secretary for Medical Service in the State Department for Medical Service, Dr Ouma Oluga has launched an urgent blood drive at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) following a tragic accident along the Kisumu-Kakamega highway.

The fatal accident occurred on Friday evening, August 8, 2025, after a school bus belonging to Naki AIC High School overturned near the Coptic roundabout area, claiming 25 lives and injuring others.

In a statement shared by the State Department for Medical Services on Friday night, Oluga stated that the blood drive aims to support the 32 survivors of the road accident who are receiving treatment at the facility.

Additionally, the PS noted that the blood drive will be held at Leresian Park within the hospital from 9:00 am on Saturday, August 9, 2025, with donations managed by the Blood Transfusion Unit.

“PS Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga has announced an urgent blood drive at JOOTRH to aid survivors of a road accident that killed 25 people along the Kisumu–Kakamega road,” the statement reads.

“Thirty-two survivors are receiving treatment at JOOTRH’s Orthopaedic Trauma Ward. The blood drive will be held at Leresian Park within the hospital from 9:00 AM on August 9, with donations managed by the Blood Transfusion Unit.”

Dr Oluga, in addition, praised JOOTRH’s swift response, noting all survivors were attended to within three hours, adding that counselling and psychosocial support are being provided to families, with government agencies coordinating further assistance.

Causality report

According to a statement posted on Facebook on August 8, 2025, by the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), which received all the victims, the bus was carrying 61 people — mostly relatives who had attended a funeral in Nyahera, Kisumu West sub-county, and were en route to Nyakach.

“Staff at JOOTRH moved swiftly this evening to receive and save the lives of survivors from a tragic road accident that occurred at the Coptic roundabout area along the Kisumu-Kakamega road,” the hospital said.

JOOTRH confirmed that 19 bodies were brought in directly from the crash scene, while two others, including a male child and two adult men, died while receiving treatment, bringing the death toll to 21.

“Twenty-one of the occupants are currently stable and receiving treatment at the hospital’s Emergency and Accident Unit,” the hospital added.
