Police in Kisumu are investigating the circumstances under which a middle-aged man is reported to have committed suicide on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at the Lake Basin Mall.

The man, identified as Juma Hanington, is said to have jumped from the second floor of the building, dying instantly at the scene.

According to a police report seen by K24 Digital, the incident was first reported by one Biwott, who stated that an unknown man had thrown himself down from the second floor of the mall.

“Hanington Juma came and parked his vehicle, registration number KCY 869G, a white Toyota Land Cruiser V8, and entered the building heading to the KRA offices before throwing himself down and dying instantly,” read part of the police report.

Eyewitnesses at the mall described the incident as shocking. One attendant said the man appeared calm when he arrived and parked his car before walking into the building.

Panic

Moments later, panic spread through the mall after a loud thud was heard, drawing shoppers and security guards to the scene.

In a statement released to the media by KRA, they described the event as unfortunate and expressed deep regret over the loss of life. The agency conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, saying it was saddened by the incident.

KRA further noted that the matter had been reported to the relevant authorities and that investigations were underway to determine what may have led to the suicide. The authority assured the public of its full cooperation with law enforcement officers handling the investigation.

Additionally, KRA used the opportunity to remind taxpayers and members of the public to report any incidents, concerns, or suspicious activities through their nearest Tax Service Office.

His body was later moved to the Aga Khan Hospital mortuary pending postmortem and further investigations.
