The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a public alert following a major traffic gridlock along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, specifically between Emali and Masimba, after a fatal road accident early Friday, May 30, 2025.

According to the police, the incident occurred in the Jet Inn area, where three trailers collided on a railway bridge, completely blocking the busy highway.

The crash has led to massive traffic congestion in both directions, severely affecting transport along one of the country’s vital roads.

In a statement released by NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, police confirmed that additional officers have been deployed to the scene to manage the situation and restore normal traffic flow.

“The National Police Service (NPS) wishes to notify the public of a serious traffic gridlock between Emali and Masimba along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway. This disruption follows a fatal road traffic accident at the Jet Inn area involving three trailers that collided on a railway bridge, completely blocking the road,” the statement of Nyaga reads in part.

“NPS is working with relevant agencies to restore normal traffic flow. Additional police officers have been deployed to the area and will take stern action against anyone violating traffic rules.”

Alternative route

Following the incident, motorists have been urged to remain patient, maintain lane discipline, and use alternative routes where possible to ease congestion.

Authorities have also advised that Mombasa-bound vehicles should divert via the Machakos-Wote-Makindu route, while those heading to Nairobi are encouraged to use the Makindu-Wote-Machakos route.

“We urge motorists to exercise patience and maintain lane discipline and consider alternative routes to ease congestion and enhance safety. Mombasa-bound traffic should consider using the Machakos-Wote-Makindu route, while Nairobi-bound traffic can use the Makindu-Wote-Machakos route,” the statement reads.

The NPS reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order on Kenyan roads and called on the public to cooperate with law enforcement officers during this period of disruption.
