Police laud Elgeyo Marakwet residents for surrendering over 280 guns

The National Police Service (NPS) has lauded Elgeyo Marakwet residents for positively responding to Operation Rudisha Bunduki within the Kerio Valley region, as they voluntarily surrendered over 280 guns.
In a statement on the National Police official X account on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, police announced that on Monday, October 6, 2025, the authority had recovered an AK-47 rifle with at least six rounds of ammunition voluntarily surrendered by a resident from the Sibow location in Kerio Valley.

“Members of the public from Kerio Valley continue to respond positively to ‘Operation Rudisha Bunduki’ within the region. Yesterday, 6th October 2025, a resident from the Sibow location voluntarily handed over an AK-47 rifle with six rounds of ammunition to the security agencies,” NPS.
In addition, the National Police Service further announced that so far since the programme, a total of two hundred and eighty-two illegal firearms have been voluntarily surrendered.
Likewise, police revealed that of the two hundred and eighty-two firearms, there were two thousand and thirty-nine rounds of ammunition and one rifle grenade.
“This surrender brings the total to two hundred and eighty-two illegal firearms, along with two thousand and thirty-nine rounds of ammunition and one rifle grenade, that have so far been surrendered,” NPS noted.
The police department has further acknowledged the support and collaboration given by the communities in Elgeyo Marakwet while encouraging others who are still keeping illegal firearms to surrender them to the security authorities.
“The National Police Service acknowledges the support and collaboration given by the communities in the area. We encourage others still keeping illegal firearms to surrender them to the security authorities,” NPS said.
Kerio Valley
This comes just days after 27 illegal firearms were voluntarily surrendered, including AK-47 and G3 rifles, to police in Tot, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
At the time, in a statement on Thursday, September 25, 2025, NPS revealed that the firearms were handed over through the cooperation of community members and Peace Committees drawn from Ketut, Chemwonyo, Kibaimwa, Mon, Chesuman, Kaben, and Endo.
“The weapons have been taken into safe custody. This latest surrender brings the total number of firearms recovered under ‘Operation Rudisha Bunduki’ to 232, along with 1,595 rounds of ammunition,” read the statement in part.
The residents had earlier surrendered 22 illegal firearms.
