Mercy Kanini’s 5 babies laid to rest in Migori

Family members, friends and well-wishers gathered in Migori County on Friday, September 25, 2026, to bid farewell to Mercy Kanini’s five babies, who were laid to rest in an emotional burial ceremony.

The five babies, named Bravin, Bravlyn, Bravelle, Bravina and Bravelyn, were buried together in one grave as their loved ones said their final goodbyes.

Their five small caskets were wrapped in Kenyan flags before they were lowered into the same grave, marking the final farewell for the babies whose deaths left the family and many Kenyans mourning.

Eric Omondi thanks Kenyans

Comedian Eric Omondi, who had rallied Kenyans to support Kanini’s family, shared moments from the burial while thanking those who stood with the family.

“TEAM SISI KWA SISI, THANK YOU FOR STANDING WITH Our Sister. She Says Thank You 🙏🙏🙏🙏,” Omondi wrote.

He also revealed the names the family had given the babies, writing: “We gave our Children names Bravin, Bravlyn, Bravelle, Bravina, Bravelyn.”

Omondi had earlier appealed to Kenyans to support Kanini following the death of her quintuplets, saying the assistance would help the family give the babies a respectable send-off and support their mother.

Memorial held in Nairobi

The burial came a day after family, friends, church leaders and well-wishers gathered at All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi on Thursday, September 24, for a memorial service for the five babies.

During the memorial, Omondi offered words of comfort to Kanini and her family as they prepared to lay the babies to rest.

“May you have strength from Him that surpasses human understanding,” Omondi said, while also thanking Reverend Ignatius for continuing to open the church doors to the family.

After the memorial, the five bodies were transported to Migori County for burial at the family’s ancestral home.

How the tragedy unfolded

Kanini, a mother from Juja in Kiambu County, made headlines after giving birth to quintuplets at Thika Level Five Hospital.

The five babies, four girls and one boy, were born at about 25 weeks and were later transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialised neonatal care due to their extreme prematurity.

KNH reported that the babies weighed between approximately 630 grammes and 800 grammes and faced serious medical challenges associated with extreme prematurity.

Four of the babies died first, leaving the baby boy as the only surviving infant. However, KNH later confirmed that the fifth baby had also died, meaning all five children had lost their lives.

The hospital said a multidisciplinary neonatal team, including neonatologists, nurses and other healthcare professionals, provided specialised care to the babies from the time they were admitted.

Despite the medical intervention, none of the five babies survived.
