Matatu culture

For decades, matatu culture — characterised by brightly painted vehicles, intricate graffiti murals, booming sound systems, and bold urban expressions — has been synonymous with Nairobi.

In the capital, matatus evolved from simple public transport vehicles into moving works of art, doubling as cultural billboards for music, sports icons, political messages, and pop culture references.

The style has influenced fashion trends, inspired musical genres, and turned some matatus into tourist attractions in their own right.

While Nairobi has long been regarded as the heartbeat of this culture, the coast has been steadily developing its own vibrant matatu scene, blending the iconic flair with Swahili artistry, coastal music, and laid-back vibes unique to Mombasa.

The Mombasa Matatu Awards mark a milestone in recognising this growing industry, celebrating its contribution to both the economy and the city’s cultural identity.
