Omtatah dismisses Kenya Kwanza–ODM joint meeting as distraction

Busia Senator and Human Rights activist Okiya Omtatah has rubbished the joint meeting between President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance and Raila Odinga’s ODM party held in Karen on Monday, August 18, 2025, describing it as a mere distraction from the real issues affecting Kenyans.

Taking to his official X account, Omtatah said the resolutions agreed upon after the meeting, which emphasised unity and fast-tracking national agendas, deliberately avoided addressing the crises Kenyans are facing, such as corruption in the executive and counties.

“What we witnessed in Karen today is yet another distraction. Kenya Kwanza and ODM issued hollow resolutions about ‘unity’ and ‘fast-tracking agendas,’ yet deliberately ignored the elephants in the room: runaway corruption in the Executive and in counties, anti-graft institutions turned into rent-seeking rackets shielding thieves, and a ballooning national debt, much of it odious debt that chains Kenyans for generations,” he said.

According to Omtatah, instead of tackling corruption and reckless borrowing, leaders are preoccupied with creating endless committees and issuing statements that do nothing to restore public trust.

“Instead of confronting these crises, our leaders are busy multiplying useless committees. Endless talk shops cannot fix a broken economy or restore public trust. The real question is: what is in it for the people?” Omtatah stated.

In addition, the outspoken senator warned that the unity of the political class is meaningless if it only serves to protect corrupt individuals.

He urged leaders to fully implement the Constitution of Kenya 2010, fight graft, cancel odious debts, and focus on policies that lower the cost of living, create jobs, spur industrialisation, and enforce accountability.

“Kenyans are not fooled. Kenyans are demanding an end to looting, reckless borrowing, and empty politics. Wajinga waliisha Kenya. What this nation needs are policies that lower the cost of living, create jobs, spur industrialisation, and enforce accountability,” he added.

“Unity at the top is meaningless if it only protects thieves. The Constitution of Kenya 2010 already gave us the framework; just follow it, fight graft, cancel odious debts, and serve the people. Anything less is outright betrayal.”

Joint meeting

This comes after Members of Parliament (MPs) from Kenya Kwanza and ODM held a joint meeting and adopted six key resolutions aimed at fostering national unity, legislative cooperation, and development.

The joint group reaffirmed its responsibility to implement the 10-point agenda, focusing on economic growth, social justice, job creation, healthcare, education, infrastructure, agriculture, governance, and youth and women empowerment.
