Comedian-turned-activist and philanthropist Eric Omondi has started a fundraiser to construct a classroom for children in Kapoo area, Turkana County who are currently learning under harsh conditions.

In a video shared on his Instagram account on Saturday, January 2025, Omondi highlighted the struggles faced by the children. The footage showed them sitting on the ground, barefoot, under the scorching sun, using their hands to write in the dirt due to the lack of basic learning materials like books and pens.

“This is Kapoo in Turkana County… These young ones learn in this scorching sun barefoot… They are forced to walk several kilometres to access education through this volunteer teacher,” Omondi wrote.

He expressed his concern about the unfair circumstances the children endure, asking how they could compete on equal footing with other students across the country.

Omondi pledged immediate action to improve their learning environment.

“We are going to build a classroom for them tomorrow and buy them books, uniforms, and shoes,” he said.

The activist urged Kenyans to join his initiative by contributing to the noble cause. Donations can be sent directly to the volunteer teacher, Elizabeth Kamaret, through the provided number.

Omondi’s initiative

Omondi has been at the forefront of addressing societal challenges through his community-centred initiative, Team Sisi Kwa Sisi. This platform focuses on mobilizing resources and providing support to Kenyans in need, from funding education to offering assistance for shelter, clothing, and food.

In July 2024, Omondi fundraiser for Kyalo Wambua, a volunteer who played a role in retrieving bodies from the Kware dumpsite in Embakasi. Describing Wambua as a true hero, Omondi called on his followers to contribute towards improving Wambua’s life as a token of appreciation for his heroic efforts.

Team Sisi Kwa Sisi has also extended its support to grieving families during times of loss. Notably, the initiative covered the costs of coffins and hearses for seven individuals, ensuring they received a dignified burial.

“Team Sisi Kwa Sisi you did it again!!! Can you imagine the pain of one family losing 7 of its members in one accident? The pain of a man surviving but losing his wife and 3 daughters. It’s simply unbearable and overwhelming. Team sisi kwa sisi raised 1.6 million to give these brothers and sisters a decent send-off. God himself will reward you,” Omondi wrote on Instagram.
