The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has mourned the death of former Karachuonyo Member of Parliament (MP) Phoebe Muga Asiyo, who passed away at the age of 92.
According to her family, Asiyo passed away peacefully in her sleep while in North Carolina, USA.
In a statement on July 17, 2025, ODM mourned Asiyo as a trailblazer in women’s leadership and an astute debater during her time in parliament.
“We join the Asiyo family, the people of Homabay County, and the nation as a whole following the passing on (today) of Mama, Phoebe Muga Asiyo, a trailblazer in women’s leadership and an astute debater during her time in Parliament. Her service to humanity will be missed,” read the statement.

Gladys Wanga’s tribute
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga also mourned her passing, describing her as a trailblazer, mentor, and beacon of hope for many.
In an emotional statement on July 17, 2025, Wanga said her heart was heavy as the country mourned the loss of a woman whose leadership and courage paved the way for generations.
“Mama Phoebe Asiyo was not just a leader. She was the steady hand that lifted others, the voice that spoke for the voiceless, and the unwavering spirit that refused to accept injustice.”
Wanga recalled Asiyo’s historic role as the first African chairperson of Maendeleo Ya Wanawake, her tenure as Member of Parliament for Karachuonyo, and her tireless global advocacy for women’s rights through UNIFEM. She noted that Asiyo was more than her accolades, including the prestigious Order of the Golden Warrior and Chief of the Burning Spear, but a daughter of the Lake and a champion for her people.
“She dismantled barriers so others could follow. Her wisdom was a gift, her strength an inspiration, and her absence now leaves a silence that echoes.”
The governor expressed her condolences to Asiyo’s family, the people of Homa Bay, and all the institutions and communities the late leader impacted throughout her life.
“We have not just lost a leader; we have lost a mother, a teacher, and a defender of what is right. May her family find comfort in knowing her legacy lives on in every woman who stands taller because of her and in every voice that speaks louder because she taught us how. Sleep well, Mama. Your fire burns on in all you’ve left behind.”
