Nyong’o offers to provide support after tragic Kisumu-Kakamega Highway accident

Kisumu County Governor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o has expressed deep sorrow following a tragic road accident on the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway on the evening of August 8, 2025.

Speaking through his official X account, the governor offered condolences to the victims’ families and urged caution on the roads.

Sorrow and support

“It is with a very heavy heart that I have learnt of the tragic road accident on the Kisumu – Kakamega Highway this evening! My sincere condolences to the families and friends who have lost their loved ones in the accident,” said Governor Nyong’o.

On behalf of the County Government of Kisumu, he offered prayers for those injured and assured support to the affected families, especially in Nyakach and Nyahera.

“My Office is working with all the relevant authorities to provide any requisite support at the moment as we continue to urge for caution on our roads and by the road users. Poleni sana!”

Hospital confirms toll

This follows confirmation by Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) that 21 people have died from the accident, while 21 others are receiving treatment after a school bus carrying 61 family members rolled over near the Coptic roundabout on the Kisumu-Kakamega road.

The hospital’s emergency unit received 19 bodies from the scene, with two unidentified adult males and a child succumbing to injuries upon arrival.

Ongoing support available

JOOTRH has set up a help desk providing psycho-social support for relatives seeking information about their loved ones. The hospital remains on high alert to manage any further emergencies.

The tragedy serves as a stern reminder to all road users to exercise caution to prevent further loss of life.
