Anyang’ Nyong’o mourns students killed in tragic road accident
Kisumu County Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has mourned the students killed in the tragic Kibwon crash in Nyakach Sub-County.
In an official statement, Nyong’o detailed the devastating incident, which occurred on the morning of Wednesday, April 2, 2025. He stated that a matatu carrying students from Ober Boys Boarding School in Homa Bay County crashed into a lorry, resulting in the deaths of three students and injuries to 19 others.
The governor went on to say that the conductor of the ill-fated vehicle also perished in the accident, which occurred just a few kilometres from Sondu Township.
“This morning, Kisumu County woke up to reports of a terrible road accident when a matatu ferrying students of Ober Boys Boarding School in Homa Bay County to Kisumu crashed into a lorry at Kibwon, in Nyakach Sub County, killing three of the students and leaving 19 others injured,” Nyong’o said.
“The conductor of the ill-fated vehicle also died in the accident that occurred a few kilometres from Sondu Township.”
Nyong’o further expressed deep sorrow and extended his condolences to the families, teachers, and students of Ober Boys Boarding School.
“On behalf of the people of Kisumu County, I convey heartfelt condolences to teachers, pupils, and parents of Ober Boys Boarding School for this great loss of lives of the pupils who were travelling to their homes for the April holidays,” he added.
Emphasising the need for drivers to exercise caution and uphold professionalism to prevent such accidents in the future, the governor lamented the loss of young lives in what he termed an avoidable tragedy.
“It is unfortunate that we have lost such young souls in a tragic accident that could have been avoided had the drivers of the two vehicles taken the required caution and adhered to professionalism,” he lamented.
Nyong’o’s appeal
The governor further called upon the police to launch an immediate and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
He also urged authorities to take appropriate action against any individuals whose mistakes or negligence may have contributed to the crash.
“I wish to appeal to the police to immediately launch detailed investigations into this accident to establish the cause and take appropriate action against individuals whose mistakes may have led to the crash,” Nyong’o appealed.
“My heart goes out to the parents and relatives of those who perished in the accident. I also wish a quick recovery to those admitted to hospitals with injuries.”
