Njuri Ncheke, which is the Supreme governing council of elders, on Sunday, January 13 endorsed Nairobi County Governor Anne Kananu ahead of the August 2022 elections.
The elders, led by the council’s Chairman Linus Kathera, Secretary-General Washington Muthamia also asked Governor Kananu to work closely with Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga.
The elders were speaking when they paid Kananu a courtesy call at her Karen residence in Nairobi.
However, this came with a caution that Odinga should also endorse Kananu for the Nairobi County top seat.
“Any serious presidential candidate should ensure that they support our daughter since she is currently the governor of Nairobi,” Kathera said.
This means that Odinga should have to calculate his moves in order to ensure that he woos Meru voters at large following the endorsement.
Currently, Westlands Member of Parliament (MP) Tim Wanyonyi and brother to Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula, has declared his interest in taking over from Kananu.
Others working with Odinga under the Azimio umbrella and are eyeing the Governorship is Dennis Waweru the former Dagoretti South MP.
“Any presidential aspirant wishing to woo the Meru community at large not only in Nairobi should begin by supporting Kananu. Otherwise, they should stop wasting their time,” Kathera further said.
The elders also said that they were satisfied with the current relationship between Odinga and the Azimio team at large.
Kathera cautioned Governor Kananu also not to attempt and work with other Presidential candidates as this will affect her aspirations.
The elders also said that they were open to sacrificing the Deputy President’s position for the Kikuyu community hence urging President Uhuru Kenyatta and Odinga to return the favor.
Currently, Nairobi County is seeing a beehive of political activities.
