Former Attorney General and Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has revealed that President William Ruto, while still serving as deputy president, repeatedly reached out to him seeking to understand what had gone wrong between him and then-President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Speaking during a podcast aired on Monday, July 14, 2025, Muturi stated that Ruto would call him on numerous occasions, expressing confusion over why Uhuru had seemingly turned against him and asking if Muturi could help him understand what he might have done to warrant the fallout.

“Sometimes William would call me, sometimes ask me, ‘What is it that I did to my brother Uhuru? Can you find out for me?’ That went on for a long time,” Muturi said.

Muturi said that after several such appeals, he decided to take the initiative and try to mediate between the two leaders.

He began engaging both of them separately in an effort to bring them back together. His efforts culminated in January 2020 when he reached out to Cardinal John Njue and secured an appointment to meet him in his office.

“I continued talking to each of them separately until sometime in January 2020, before COVID. I called them ‘cardinal’ and explained to him that I was finding it very difficult that everybody could see that the president and his deputy were drifting apart,” he added.

During the meeting, Muturi shared his observations, noting that it had become crystal clear that the relationship between Uhuru and Ruto was deteriorating.

He told the Cardinal that even a child could tell the two leaders were no longer united, despite putting on brave faces in public.

His request to Njue

Muturi then requested the Cardinal to consider convening a group of six to ten senior Catholic clergy to explore the possibility of helping reconcile the two leaders.

The Cardinal agreed with Muturi’s proposal but admitted he was not fully aware of the root cause of the fallout between the two.

“I requested Cardinal Njue, as the head of the Catholic Church, to see if he could call other senior clergy – about 6, 7 or up to 10 – to go and bring these two together,” JB said.
