Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has demanded that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua record a statement with security agencies upon his return to the country, following his recent remarks linking President William Ruto to claims of meetings with Al Shabaab leaders.

Speaking on Saturday, August 9, 2025, during an Economic Empowerment event in Elgeyo Marakwet attended by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and other Kenya Kwanza leaders, Murkomen strongly criticised Gachagua’s statements, describing them as reckless, unfounded, and harmful to Kenya’s international reputation.

“You must carry yourself with utmost respect. I saw a man sitting where you are sitting the other day disparaging our country, talking about issues of insecurity as if it is a joke. He thinks he will parade issues of terrorism in America to get votes,” Murkomen said.

Call for evidence

The CS stressed that Gachagua should not be allowed to make such serious accusations without providing proof.

“We want to say without fear of contradiction that because he has said he has information, as soon as he lands in Kenya, he must record a statement and tell us which meetings he was having with terrorists,” Murkomen asserted.

Murkomen went on to question Gachagua’s leadership track record, stating that such statements could fuel unnecessary fear and harm Kenya’s diplomatic relations.

“We have joked for far too long. How can such a person be president of Kenya? He failed to complete even half his term as DP and now says he will run for one term,” Murkomen added.

Gachagua’s earlier claims

Gachagua, while addressing a separate gathering earlier this week, claimed that President Ruto met three Al Shabaab leaders in Mandera at night to discuss undisclosed issues.

“We want to know why you are working with Al Shabaab. When you were in Mandera, you met three Al Shabaab leaders at night,” Gachagua claimed.

He further claimed the United States was concerned that suspected terrorists could be registered as Kenyan citizens and later gain entry into America and other countries to commit acts of terror.
