Gachagua accuses Ruto of trying to divide opposition

Democracy for Citizens (DCP) party leader Rigathi Gachagua has accused President William Ruto of deliberately attempting to fracture the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking to Kenyans during his USA tour, on Monday, July 21, 2025, Gachagua said that Ruto is deliberately sowing division within the opposition to ensure his victory in the next general elections.
He emphasised that while Ruto is smart and well-financed, the united opposition remains steadfast and unwavering.
“Ruto is trying to divide the opposition, ndio apitie katikati, yeye ni mkali na ni mjanja na ako na pesa, na watu wengi wanapenda pesa, very few people can be able to withstand corruption through money, so within our team anajaribu lakini tume kaa imara,” Gachagua said.
The former deputy president added that they are united and that the opposition leaders, including figures such as Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, Martha Karua, Fred Matiang’i, George Natembeya, Okiyo Omtatah, and others, have agreed to hold internal primaries early next year to present a single candidate capable of challenging Ruto head-on.
“Tumekibaliana mimi niko hapo, Kalonzo ako hapo, Matiang’i ako hapo, Eugune Wamalwa ako hapo. Martha Karua ako hapo, Natembeya ako, hata Omtatah na yule mtu yeyote anataka kuwa raisi tumesema kila mtu aende atafute kura zake na pale mwisho next year hapo after chrismas tuketi tuweke kura kwa meza tuulizane nani atapeperusha bendera as one candidate only against William Ruto,”he added.

Wandayi on Kalonzo-Ruto unity
This comes after Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi hinted at a possible collaboration between Ruto’s government and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, despite Kalonzo’s strong alignment with the opposition.
Speaking in Mwingi on Monday, July 21, 2025, Wandayi urged Kenyans not to be surprised if political realignments unfold, suggesting that the country’s leadership must rise above personal differences for the sake of national progress.
“God’s plans are many, and very soon, do not be surprised if you see us working with Honourable Kalonzo. You might even be shocked to see that Kalonzo is now working with Honourable Ruto, while Honourable Raila works with Honourable Kindiki. Kenya is bigger than any one of us,” Wandayi said.
The CS emphasised that the government’s priority at the moment is not politics but development, noting that political contests will be addressed at the appropriate time.
He insisted that leaders within Ruto’s inner circle are currently focused on helping him fulfil all his promises, adding that they are vigorously pushing for development so that Ruto can have a strong scorecard to present when the 2027 polls arrive.
“We have said as the government that political issues are not our focus for now. At this point in time, our focus is on development. Politics should come later. Right now, our duty is to help Honourable Ruto deliver on his promises so that when election time comes, we return to you with a scorecard,” he added.
