The Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has congratulated the winners and participants of the 2024 Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon.
Taking to his official X account on Sunday, October 27, 2024, Murkomen hailed the event as a significant contributor to the development of local talent and the promotion of fitness and health across the country.
Murkomen on StanChart Marathon
Murkomen praised the competition’s role in inspiring a culture of healthy living and in supporting various charitable causes.
This year’s edition of StanChart Nairobi Marathon saw over 25,000 runners take part, with 92 countries participating.
“Congratulations to the winners in all the categories in this year’s edition of the StanChartMarathon. Having a major marathon like this in our country goes a long way in developing and rewarding local talent. With over 25,000 runners today, this marathon has inspired many people to run for fitness and health while at the same time supporting charitable causes,” Murkomen stated.
The event drew elite runners, recreational athletes, and families alike, creating a vibrant atmosphere that extended beyond just the race.
Murkomen commends sponsors
Murkomen commended the organizers, volunteers, and sponsors, noting that their contributions made the event a tremendous success.
He further highlighted the significant role the private sector played in ensuring the marathon’s success, with over 40 partners and sponsors coming together to support the event.
“The Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon is a testament to the impact the private sector has on sports, with over 40 partners and sponsors having come together to make this event a great success. Thanks to them, we have witnessed elite runners making their dreams come true, families having fun and recreational athletes experiencing the joy of running. The 21st edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon took place on Sunday, October 27, 2024.
The 21km wheelchair race kicked off the events at 5:45 am followed by the 42km race at 6 am, the 21km at 7:20 am, the 10km at 8:45 am and the 5km fun run at 10 am.
All races will started at the Southern Bypass and finished at Uhuru Gardens along Lang’ata Road, except for the 5km, which concluded at the Southern Bypass.
As a result of the marathon, a section of the roads in Nairobi will remain closed until 1:30 pm.
StanChart Marathon winners
Gladys Chemutai secured victory in the 42km women’s race at the StanChart Nairobi Marathon.
Chemutai crossed the finish line in a stunning 2:31:52.
She finished ahead of Caroline Koech and and Joy Kemuma who clocked 2:35:00 and 2:36:06 respectively. She will walk away with a cash prize of Ksh2 million for claiming the top position.
Ronald Kimeli Kurgat claimed victory in the men’s 42-kilometre event, clocking in at 2 hours, 13 minutes, and 5 seconds.
Dominick Kipkirui followed Kimeli just eight seconds behind, and Peter Kwemoi Ndorobo finished a second later, completing the top three.
In the men’s 21-kilometer event, Vincent Mutai demonstrated both resilience and athleticism, overcoming physical challenges to lead the field.
Mutai crossed the finish line in 1 hour, 3 minutes, and 27 seconds.
Though he struggled midway, feeling nauseous twice, Mutai’s pace control secured him the win, edging out Keyborn Obato and Silas Chepkwony, who finished in 1:03:34 and 1:03:51, respectively.
